VICTORIA DUFFIELD - "SHUT UP AND DANCE" ALBUM REVIEW

Victoria Duffield - Shut Up and Dance
All hail the new Princess of Canadian Pop! Although Victoria Duffield still neatly can placed in the Emerging Artists category, with just the right amount of push, she could well be Canada’s next big international Export. Case in point, Carly Rae Jepsen already has proven her mettle abroad and Duffield equally has what it takes to accomplish this. In the v. least she is collaborating with the right names. Ryan Stewart, who is responsible for some of Jepsen’s recent material, co-writes with Duffield on this stellar and compact eight-track debut, Shut Up and Dance.

Since being teased late 2011 with the undeniably catchy Title Track, my curiosity has been piqued by the 18-year-old Singer from Abbotsford, BC. Although second Single, a Kylie-inspired Feel, went over the heads of the Canadian Public failing to achieve the same level of success as Shut Up and Dance, its standing as a quality piece of Dance-Pop remains untarnished.

Current Single, Break My Heart is a cut from the same cloth as Duffield's Debut, channeling inflections of Femme Fatale-era Britney. Duffield’s genius as a Pop Artist here perhaps comes from the one word she doesn’t sing in the Track's Hook, “I know you're only gonna break my ____”. It is impossible to not want to fill in that blank and furthermore, it is impossible to not want to sing along.

A catchy Duet with Aussie Pop Sensation Cody Simpson, They Don’t Know About Us, opens many possibilities in terms of exposure for her and is strategically-spotted. Sweet Fantasy borders a bit on Mariah Carey/R&B-Pop territory and is another Gem in this Collection of Winners. Meanwhile, Final Warning leaves us wanting more by the end of this just-long-enough introduction to Duffield.  Keep in mind, we still haven’t heard the best of Duffield yet and I can vouch that she is the real deal live - a real Pop Star.

V. Duffield, v. good. Warner Music releases Shut Up and Dance in Canada, August 21, 2012.  Order it here

I did have the pleasure of chatting Duffield over the Winter. Click here for more.

TRAIN, CARLY RAE JEPSEN, MARIANAS TRENCH, VICTORIA DUFFIELD & MORE AT 2012 CHUM FM FANFEST

2012 CHUM FM FANFEST: Train, Fefe Dobson, Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench and more
One part of Canadian Music Week I look forward to most every year is the Line-up at 104.5 CHUM FM's Fanfest and once again this year they did not disappoint, bringing-in three-time GRAMMY Winners Train as the Headliner.  The Trio performed a generous Set which included Hits Hey, Soul Sister, Drops of Jupiter and their latest, Drive By and apparently a bra may have been tossed on-stage at one point!  A Tribute to Journey was even thrown-in for good measure!

Others to grace the stage at Masonic Temple this evening included super-hot Carly Rae Jepsen (recently signed to Interscope Records in the U.S.) who unfortunately couldn't stop for many Photos on her way in and out of the Venue, Marianas Trench, Fefe Dobson (filling-in for Hedley whom had issues flying to Toronto), The New Cities, Victoria Duffield (!!) and more.

After the four-hour-long Show, some patient Fans got to meet their Idols (some sober, some tipsy) outside the Venue and Train Lead Vocalist Pat Monahan was most gracious stopping to take Photos with hoards of female Fans, despite some of his Handlers trying to curtail it.  Meanwhile Duffield was low-key avoiding the radar of Fans who waited all night for her.  Rock Diva Suzie McNeil was spotted supporting her Pal Josh Ramsay, Frontman of Marianas Trench.  After exchanging hugs, she tells me "My Album will be released at some point...", commenting on when we can expect new Music from her.

Until next year...

VIDEO PREMIERE: VICTORIA DUFFIELD - "FEEL"

Still from Feel
So proud of her! Carly Rae Jepsen isn't the only Girl from British Columbia who's making a splash as this little Sister's got game too. Check out 16-year-old Victoria Duffield's new Video for second Single, Feel. She's channeling some serious pre-Blackout Britney here and is a real force to be reckoned with!  Although it might take me a few more listens to love than her Platinum-selling Shut Up and Dance, I definitely think I will grow to love this.  It's about time Canada had a Dance-Pop Princess of its own. Duffield is she.

Watch the Video for Feel in full below:

Over the Holidays, I got to chat quickly with Duffield during her Toronto stay. Watch it here.

Super-talented 14 year-old Diego Gomes was spotted out and about in Entertainment District today. Some of you might remember Gomes as the Season Three Winner of YTV's Reality Show The Next Star, which has spawned some great young Artists like Alyssa Reid and Victoria Duffield, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing recently.

Gomes was amazing enough to stop to pose for Photos with some v. cold Fans who were waiting outside Chapters to meet Cody Simpson.  Isn't he stylin' in his Canada Goose Jacket?

INTERVIEW: VICTORIA DUFFIELD - CANADA'S HOTTEST NEW POP SENSATION

Victoria Duffield
If Victoria Duffield looks familiar to you, well that would be because the ambitious and effervescent 16 year-old from Abbotsford, British Columbia is pretty much everywhere these days. You've seen on her hit Series like Smallville and Supernatural already and now the multi-talented Duffield begins her foray into the world of Pop Music with her debut Single Shut Up and Dance

Since hitting the Airwaves here in Canada just over two months ago, the Track already has climbed its way up the Top 20 of the Canadian Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart. She also has reached number one on the Emerging Canadian Artists Chart with the Track co-written by herself and fellow Canadian Ryan Stewart.  If you listen to Top 40 Radio in Canada, her Ke$ha/Britney-esque vibe is unavoidable. No complaints here as I love it.

Victoria Duffield & Mr. Will-W.
After having been signed to Warner Music Canada in Summer 2010, Duffield's Music Career has progressed fast and furious.  Fitting in a quick Interview with Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven today between two performances scheduled at Nathan Phillips Square and Mississauga back-to-back, we got to know about Duffield's love of Dance and her greatest Idol, Britney Spears. Many will be shocked and impressed to know that she attends High School full-time and boasts a 99% Average currently.  Her Brother Burkley Duffield, also an Actor, has been in England for quite some time working on Nickelodeon series House of Anubis and she misses him terribly also we learned.
