FIRST LOOK: "OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL"

Still from Oz the Great and Powerful
"Are you the great Man we've been waiting for?".

The Trailer for Oz the Great and Powerful premiered yesterday at Comic-Con in San Diego and now we also get our first look at it! James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz are set to wow us in this Sam Raimi-directed Spectacle, which gives us the Back Story on how small-time Magician Oscar (Franco) goes on to become to great Wizard of Oz.

Official Synopsis is as follows:
Disney’s fantastical Adventure Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three Witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great Wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his Magical Arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

2012 OSCAR NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Jennifer Lawrence announces 2012 Oscar Nominees
The 2012 Oscar nominations were announced bright and early this morning with the help of The Hunger Games Star Jennifer Lawrence and the surprises just wouldn't quit! Martin Scorcese came out on-top with an impressive eleven nominations, including Best Picture. Many also were surprised to see the sudden presence of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which has been a non-presence much of Awards Season, only to pop-up finally for the coveted prize - a brilliant campaign by Warner Bros. to shape perceptions with as late a release as possible. Nonetheless, The Artist which has swept Best Picture awards coast to coast leading up to this, receives a stellar ten nominations. It is without a question the one to beat, although other Nominees The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, War Horse, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and The Help might have something to say about this.

Everyone is talking about some surprising omissions, namely both Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan for their mesmerizing work in Shame Elizabeth Olsen who is astoundingly good in Martha Marcy May Marlene also was nowhere to be found either and some are saying that Fox Searchlight which handled distribution for both Films in the U.S., had tapped-out its resources campaigning for its Prize Horse, The Descendants. Also, The Adventures of Tintin, widely considered a contender for Animated Feature Film at one point was overlooked altogether this year.

There were some real pleasant surprises to be had this morning, especially for Actor in a Supporting Role with Jonah Hill (Moneyball), Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn), Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) and Nick Nolte (Warrior) all popping-up based on their powerful performances, to join category favourite, Christopher Plummer (Beginners).  Despite Warrior failing to garner critical and commercial success, it is thrilling that Nolte gets his due recognition as an alcoholic Father on-the-mend, hoping to repair his relationships with his two Sons.

Michelle Williams Backstage at 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards
The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards went down earlier this evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and there were few surprises to be found with Oscars Frontrunner The Artist winning Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and its closest competitor The Descendants winning Best Motion Picture Drama.

The Artist also won for Best Original Motion Picture Score (Ludovic Bource) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical (Jean Dujardin), while The Descendants won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama (George Clooney). Clooney upon accepting his award told fellow Nominee Michael Fassbender, "Thanks for taking over the frontal nudity clause" - referring to that one's daring performance in Shame. "If you want to go play Golf with your hands behind your back, go right ahead!".

Michelle Williams won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical for her outstanding portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, while current Oscar favourite for Best Actress, the formidable Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama - her eighth Golden Globe. Modern Family won Best Television Comedy or Musical for a third consecutive year, while Showtime's Homeland won two awards for Best Television Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama (Clare Danes).

"TREE OF LIFE" NAMED "BEST PICTURE" BY TORONTO FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION

Stills from Tree of Life
Winners of the 2011 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards were announced last night and there were a couple surprises.  Terrence Malick's polarizing Tree of Life, may have baffled some Moviegoers - earlier this year Cineplex had issued a "no refunds" Template Letter to customers who complained about it - but the Critics loved it and awarded it Best Picture.

In the Acting Categories, Michael Shannon took home top honours for Best Actor with Take Shelter, while his Co-star Jessica Chastain was awarded Best Supporting Actress Chastain beat herself out for her performance in Tree of Life also in that same category in winning First Runner-up.

Michelle Williams, who was absolutely stunning in Alliance Films' My Week with Marilyn, won Best Actress deservedly, edging out Newcomer Elizabeth Olsen for Martha Marcy May Marlene and Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady.

Our v. own Christopher Plummer was awarded Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, also from Alliance Films and likely will be a force at the Oscars for his portrayal as an ailing Gay Man.

DIRECTOR SIMON CURTIS IN TORONTO FOR "MY WEEK WITH MARILYN"

Director Simon Curtis in Toronto - November 2011
Those attending a Special Advance Screening of My Week With Marilyn in Toronto tonight got a great surprise!  With this being British Television Director Simon Curtis' first Feature Film, many would be fooled judging by the outstanding Cast he is working with in this Adaptation of  the 2000 Memoir of the same Title by Colin Clark. The response tonight was unanimous at Varsity Cinemas as Moviegoers were floored by Michelle Williams' shoe-in Oscar-contending performance as iconic Marilyn Monroe.

My Week with Marilyn centers around a week in the life of Colin (Eddie Redmayne), who stumbles upon a Job as a Third-Assistant Director to Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in his Film, The Price & The Showgirl. Threatened by the presence of his imposing Co-Star Marilyn Monroe (Williams), we see passions flare as the two Stars clash on-and-off Camera.  We also see an intimate Friendship develop between a married Marilyn and her young, lovestruck/starstruck Confidante, Colin.

Curtis fielded questions from The Movie Network's Teri Hart, telling us that he had only Williams in mind for the challenging part based on her incredible versatility and her careful nuances.  He admitted to being nervous about whether or not she would accept the Role after first meeting with her in New York. Without a doubt it would appear his faith in the once-Oscar nominated Actress (Brokeback Mountain) has paid-off in dividends with buzz reaching a feverish pitch right now for Williams.

After seeing My Week with Marilyn, you will be dazzled by Williams' singing ability, which even Curtis said surprised him.  With a handful of performances seen in the Film, the Director tells the Audience that these serve to give us a bit of that Marilyn Monroe we would expect to see.  The Film however, shows us a side of her personality and those crippling insecurities which few saw.  I cried three times watching Williams' tour-de-force Performance.

See Curtis comment below on Sir Laurence Olivier & Marilyn Monroe:

FIRST TRAILER: "THE IRON LADY"

Still from The Iron Lady
"With all due respect Sir, I have done battle every single day of my Life.".

Gosh, I am praying they didn't throw all the good bits only in the Trailer on this one. The first official UK Trailer for The Iron Lady has surfaced and Meryl Streep is just astonishingly good once again here amping up the theatrics as Margaret Thatcher. It already is shaping-up strictly to be a Michelle Williams vs. Meryl Streep Battle for the Oscar at this point in the game and as much as I am excited to see My Week with Marilyn this Thursday, I must say that Streep just appears to delve that extra inch deeper.  We'll soon know.

Here, you can judge for yourself:

SARAH POLLEY CONFIRMS PREGNANCY

Sarah Polley & Mr. Will-W. - June 2011
Just four days ahead of her TIFF Premiere for Take this Waltz, Actress/Director/Writer Sarah Polley has confirmed that she is three-and-a-half months pregnant with a Child from her Husband, Law Teacher David Sandomierski.

That would mean that when I last ran into her in June outside the National Film Board of Canada (seen above), she already had just conceived this first Child. Amaze.  At that time Polley wasn't able to confirm yet that Take This Waltz would be premiering at TIFF saying to me, "Nothing's finalized yet!".

Technically though, this Baby really could be considered Polley's third Child. Her first Baby, 2008's Away from Her, was born to much acclaim in its TIFF Premiere and eventually an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The impending birth of her second Baby this weekend in Take This Waltz, also boasts some strong lineage as Michelle Williams appears to be getting Oscar buzz too for her work also.  Congratulations all around, Ms. Polley

DISNEY'S "OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL" BEGINS PRODUCTION IN MICHIGAN

James Franco at TIFF 2010
Not to be confused with Dorothy of Oz starring Glee’s Lea Michele, Disney’s upcoming Fantasy-Adventure, Oz The Great and Powerful, began shooting yesterday at Raleigh Studios in Pontiac, Michigan. The Film directed by Sam Raimi, features some Oscar-calibre talent including James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zac Braff and newcomer Joey King.

Oz The Great and Powerful can be considered a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, telling the story of Oscar Diggs (Franco) who is a Circus Magician swept away from Kansas to the Land of Oz. He has three sceptics though in three witches, Glinda (Williams), Evanora (Weisz) and Theodora (Kunis). Before he knows it, Oscar is caught amidst the problems facing the Land of Oz. Will he be able to use his magical talents and wizardry to save its people from evil?

Walt Disney Motion Pictures is set to release Oz the Great and Powerful on March 8, 2013.

SARAH POLLEY COMMENTS ON "TAKE THIS WALTZ"

Sarah Polley & Mr. Will-W.
Just as I was heading into a Screening tonight, I ran into acclaimed Gemini and Genie Award-winning Actress/Oscar-nominated Screenwriter Sarah Polley coming out of the National Film Board of Canada.  Just as she head off to her next destination, kindly she stopped to pose for a Photo.

I had to of course ask her my most burning question - whether or not her Toronto-filmed Take this Waltz will be premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.  She smiled back at me, "Nothing's finalized yet!".  That answer would in the least bit appear to indicate it's in close contention?  And considering her favourable relationship with TIFF, I'd say she's a shoe-in!

Polley's 2008 directorial debut Away from Her premiered at TIFF, eventually seeing Julie Christie get an Oscar nomination, in addition to a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for her own writing.  I did camp-out at the set for Take this Waltz last Summer and you can read some of my coverage here.

MR. WILL-W.'S GREATEST MOMENTS OF 2010: A REVIEW OF CELEBRITIES WHO VISITED TORONTO

What can I say? 2010 has been a wonderful year for Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven, seeing many highs in terms of exciting new content and readership. Although we’re by no means Perez Hilton or Just Jared, I  maintain a humble grassroots philosophy here.  I don't believe in bashing other Bloggers by constantly calculating their shortcomings, nor do I make boastful claims of being "the best", because I'm not.  I have come with no real Media qualifications other than my opinions, but I  want always to be able to improve.

You'll find that a vast majority of the Celebrity Photos seen here are self-taken and not sold for profit.   Unlike many Celebrity Gossip sites where Bloggers sit in front of their Laptops comfortable in their often biting anonymity, I interact first-hand with many of the Celebrities who appear here. What you're reading comes first-hand - not observed from behind a bush with Binoculars nor re-interpreted.

Besides this, where else can you get detailed Reviews of Albums and Films before everybody else?  I review these beforehand so that you can make better informed choices on where you spend your hard-earned money.  And need I mention Mr. Will-W.'s Exciting Giveaways? This past year alone, we've seen Readers win Marc Jacobs Cologne, Scissor Sisters VIP Concert Tickets, CDs by artists like Rihanna and Ke$ha and Signed Photos from the likes of Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Cory Monteith, James Franco, Sam Worthington and more!  Sponsors stand behind the quality of content featured on Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven and this speaks for itself.

I thank you all personally for your loyalty to me. Things only will continue to get even more exciting in 2011.  Stick around.  Follow on Twitter or become a Fan on Facebook.

Looking back on the year, there were many bright moments and narrowing it down to a Best-of has been difficult. I am blessed to live in a City which always has something exciting going on and would not be able to do any of this without Toronto. So indirectly, all of this is a big thank you to the City I love most.  I live, breathe, eat and speak Toronto.

Without further ado, here are Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven’s Greatest Moments of 2010:

Taylor Swift
14. Seeing Taylor Swift.  She's by far the hottest thing right now in Pop Music from a numbers standpoint - and she's not even really Pop, she's Country.  I was lucky enough to see Taylor Swift in November at CTV's Canada AM, part of her crazy day of Promotions in Toronto for third album Speak Now.  Whatever she did, it worked because she sold 1,047,000 copies of the CD in its first week.  This came soon after rumours sparked of her dating Jake Gyllenhaal whom I also got to meet in May.  Although her Publicist kept her at a distance from everyone, it was still a privilege to hear the v. grounded young Singer/Songwriter just be herself.  I'll be seeing her for the first time in Concert next July and am kinda stoked about it, really.

Sir Paul McCartney
13. Seeing Sir Paul McCartney. To say I was only a couple feet away from Sir Paul McCartney in itself is enough to brag about for a lifetime. Although he was pretty much all work, no play during his two days in Toronto this past August, his presence was felt definitely. I caught McCartney quickly rolling down the window of his Escalade to throw a quick wave to Fans outside his Hotel, before heading off to his show at Air Canada Centre. With Vinyl Records, Sharpies, CDs and Cameras all aimed his direction, it was Beatlemania allover again. It was incredibly quick and incredibly memorable.

Andrew Garfield and Me
12. Meeting Andrew Garfield. Although many of us are just getting to know him, Garfield by Summer 2012 will be everywhere due to his new high-profile role as Spider-Man. This year alone, he appeared in two widely acclaimed titles, Never Let Me Go (Mark Romanek) and more familiarly The Social Network (David Fincher). I met the talented Brit at the Premiere of Never Let Me Go this past September at TIFF. Although a bit awkward with the fame thing, he still was a Gentleman. Having seen The Social Network just days prior (thanks Nadia), I delivered him great praise to which he replied, "What?  How is it that you've seen it already and I haven't?".  I took two Photos with him and hilariously, he wasn’t quite sure which way to look both times. Just having garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal as Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook in The Social Network, he’s definitely a major contender for Best Supporting Actor at next February’s Oscars. Look out.

"BLUE VALENTINE" GETS REVISED MPAA RATING

Still from Blue Valentine
At last, there is justice in the World! After much discussion the Motion Picture Association of America in a unanimous Vote, has overturned its decision to give Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine an NC-17 rating, which prohibits anyone under the age of 18 in the U.S. from seeing it in theatres.

The heartbreaking Drama instead has been given a revised Restricted rating, breaking down one more barrier in promoting the Oscar contender, as media outlets foreseeably would be reluctant to promote a Film with an NC-17 rating.

After v. publicly expressing his discontent with the MPAA's decision in October to give Blue Valentine that controversial rating, studio head Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Co. can now officially breathe a sigh of relief.

Cheers to you, Harvey Weinstein

MICHELLE WILLIAMS & RYAN GOSLING AT "BLUE VALENTINE" SCREENING IN NYC

Michelle Williams & Ryan Gosling
So sexy! Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling look amazingly co-ordinated here at a special Screening of Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine at Tribeca Grill Loft in New York City.  I love this white Party Dress with a Waterprint Poppy print on her. It seems Williams has been influenced a lot by classic looks of late in researching her latest role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn; the Film just wrapped-up in London.

The Event was organized by the Film's Producer Jane Rosenthal and Robert DeNiro, who was just seen hosting Saturday Night Live the night prior. Blue Valentine opens December 31, 2010 although there still is no word on whether or not the MPAA plans to reverse its decision of a controversial NC-17 rating for the Film....

NEW "BLUE VALENTINE" POSTER REVEALED

A racy new Poster for Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine just got released (left) according to Cinematical and I do kinda like it.  It does match the tone of the cool tone of the Film.  I still prefer the previous version of the Poster (right) a bit more even though it wasn't as literal and pink.

Still no word on whether or not Harvey Weinstein's appeal to the Motion Picture Association of America has been successful to have its rating changed from a controversial NC-17 to Rated R though.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS AT LONDON FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERE OF "BLUE VALENTINE"

Michelle Williams & Derek Cianfrance
at London Film Festival
JustJared just posted some gorgeous photos of Michelle Williams at the London Film Festival, where the charming Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine just premiered last night.  Taking a break from filming My Week With Marilyn, Williams stunned in a gorgeous lacy red number by British Designer Erdem Moralioglu and non-matching animal print Pumps.

The film's stars Ryan Gosling and Williams unfortunately have not been seen together at a premiere of the film since Cannes Film Festival this Spring, due to conflicting schedules.

"BLUE VALENTINE" SLAPPED WITH NC-17 RATING BY MPAA

Still from Blue Valentine
The Weinstein Co. is in a bit of a scramble after one of its biggest Oscar contenders Blue Valentine, was slapped with an NC-17 rating yesterday by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). Horrible, I know. For those of you unfamiliar with the rating, basically it prohibits anyone under the age of 17 from seeing it in theatres in the U.S.

But how is this really different from films which are Restricted (Rated R) in Canada Well, in Canada, anyone under the age of 18 is not permitted to a film deemded RestrictedBlue Valentine likely will get a Restricted rating in Canada. In the U.S., people under the age of 17 can watch a Restricted movie in theatres as long as they have a Parent or Guardian accompanying them.

The problem lies with the the stigmas attached to a film with an NC-17 rating.  A pornographic film can be edited down even to meet the NC-17 classification.  American Media may be reluctant to promote a film with the rating, which in turn hurts the film from a commercial standpoint without the support of advertising in traditional mediums like Radio, Newsprint and Television.

I have seen Derek Cianfrance's Blue Valentine and I loved it. In fact, I am v. passionate about it.  I will tell you that the two scenes in question which likely resulted in the film receiving the NC-17 rating are:
