Fox's American Idol Season Nine premiered tonight and we saw celebrity guest judge Victoria Beckham, fashion icon and formerly of the Spice Girls, on the show alongside Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell. The latter recently announced that this will be his last season on the show. This also marks the show's first season without judge Paula Abdul, although a more than capable replacement, Ellen DeGeneres, will be joining the show later.
One particular contestant in the Boston, Massachussetts round of auditions caught my eye, Maddy Curtis (seen above), an incredibly sweet 16 year-old girl who sang Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. She appears to be a bit of an old soul, but nonetheless was very poised. One thing which caught me off guard though was hearing her mother speaking about having a son with Down Syndrome. Maddy's mother said, "to keep him company, we decided to adopt three more kids with Down Syndrome". I mean I admire her kind spirit, but something about how that statement came out just seemed entirely off. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive and not be so judgmental?
Although commenting much on the looks of contestants, Beckham's tactful honesty is appreciated as we all know image is much a reality of pop music today and aside from Cowell, not many of the other judges spoke much about the matter. I had the chance to say a blurb about Beckham on the internationally syndicated Fashion File from CBC back in 2008 and recall her being just breathtakingly alluring in-person. I'm sure if you Google hard enough you just might find it. Click here to see some pics I got of Victoria Beckham.
