INTERVIEW: SARA BAREILLES | PHOTOS FROM TORONTO CONCERT AT THE PHOENIX

Sara Bareilles in Toronto
at The Phoenix
In less than three years, Sara Bareilles (pronounced Ba-rell-is) quickly has become a household name around the world with her brand of musical sunshine.  Her debut single Love Song was one of the biggest songs of 2008, garnering Grammy nominations for Best Pop Song and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It also reached number one on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100, U.S. Billboard Pop 100 and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks Charts.  Not bad for a first try.

Now touring in support of her Billboard Hot 200 Chart-topping sophomore album Kaleidoscope Heart, Bareilles made her fourth visit to Toronto today and sat down to chat with Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven, also answering a few questions from readers.

Sara, thank you so much for making time to chat with us today. In addition to us being huge supporters of your Music, your label Sony Music has been equally supportive of us, offering our readers a chance to see you tonight at The Phoenix, in addition to a Giveaway of your new album.  Getting a chance to speak with you just takes the Cake.

SARA BAREILLES KALEIDOSCOPE HEART REVIEW

Sara Bareilles is a rarity in a world of Pop Music Gimmickry. She doesn't rely on crazy outfits, Tabloid-feeding relationships or publicized rivalries with other Pop Stars - she truly is just about talent and the love of performing. At the same time, she does it all without giving off an air of concern for popularity. This perhaps works to her advantage and at the same time, works against her on sophomore effort Kaleidoscope Heart.

The 13-track Collection picks up where Bareilles left off with Gold-certified debut album Little Voice - a cleanly-produced Adult Contemporary sound which never loses sight of those soulful and soothingly textured vocals and of course, her wonderful Piano playing. What Bareilles does best is communicate discontent and dare I say a bit of anger against music which sounds almost too whimsical and pretty for the listener to believe otherwise. Case in point, Say You're Sorry, Gonna Get Over You, Machine Gun and first single King of Anything are reflections of failed love with the absolving of personal responsibility and hyper-critical psycho-analysis of past lovers. "Maybe nobody loved you when you were young/Baby boy when you cry nobody ever comes" she says to an ex-lover who chose to make an enemy out of her.

Bareilles just as effectively conveys delicate emotion on beautiful second single Hold My Heart which perhaps will make up for the lack of reception gorgeous single Gravity received from her debut. The same applies to The Light and heartbreakingly beautiful Breathe Again, which evokes the feeling of suffocation upon the dissolving of an all-consuming love.

SARA BAREILLES AND WHOLE FOODS UNITE TO PROMOTE NEW SINGLE "HOLD MY HEART" - LISTEN HERE

Mr. Will-W. & Sara Bareilles (2007)
"I am so happy to say that one of my favorite places on earth, Whole Foods, is going to feature a new song from my record on their blog….this is double rad, because not only am I happy to share more new music, but I kind of am obsessed with Whole Foods anyway." - Sara Bareilles

Two of my favourite things: Whole Foods and Sara Bareilles' music are coming together at last in a union of perfection. Bareilles is partnering with the Grocer to preview her new single Hold My Heart on their official Blog exclusively.  The initiative actually kinda works considering that her music fits the demographic of trendy, socially-conscious, twenty-to-forty somethings who shop at the store already. And if you shop at Whole Foods, you'll notice that they've been carrying CDs at their Cash Registers for the past while, so perhaps they will be able to cash-in on those impulse purchases from people as they're out splurging anyway.

SARA BAREILLES COVERS BEYONCÉS SINGLE LADIES

Well, it's about time! Sara Bareilles who massive 2007 hit Love Song just about inundated us from everywhere from Radio to Movie Trailers to Hold Music on Customer Servce Lines back, is prepping the release of her second album Kaleidoscope Heart. The album is now set for a September 7, 2010 release and although her debut Little Voice reached triple Platinum sales, I'm uncertain how this one will fare considering how first single King of Anything was released in May, peaking at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

To build up a bit of buzz, she did an acoustic cover of Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) yesterday as part of their Mash-up Mondays series. I love those silky smooth vocals and really, she could sing me an Eviction Notice and I'd still be entranced. Check it out below. Yay!

NEW MUSIC: SARA BAREILLES - KING OF ANYTHING

So apparently Sara Bareilles’ new track King of Anything is about actor Zach Galifianakis and it seems like the girls are all crazy about him. She kids. Or maybe not. Even Ke$ha has professed her love for the funny and furry actor.

This new track is a perfect slice of Adult Contemporary-Pop and something about Bareilles smooth tone and the melodic sense of her self-taught piano lines makes her songs so accessible. Not quite as catchy as her movie trailered to-death Love Song, but still worthy of a spot on your iPod this summer.
