MOVIE-GOERS PREFER TESTOSTERONE OVER ESTROGEN: THE EXPENDABLES LANDS ON TOP

Although it was never really much of a contest, Lionsgate/Maple Pictures' Festival of Testicles known as The Expendables, landed on top this weekend's Box Office tally with an estimated $35 million from 3,270 theatres. Although critically a failure (43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film appears to be a hit among fans of the action genre. Perusing through Twitter, praise is coming from allover.   Fans like @xsavagistx claim, "The Expendables=Violent Perfection. Simply amazing. Loved it." @yerkarmeldream admits, "As much as I HATE action movies, The Expendables was A GOOOOD movie!!!".  So there you have it.

Sony Pictures' Eat Pray Love pulled in $24 million this weekend, which is a very strong showing, even though Critics ripped it to shreds. The Julia Roberts film about a tri-continental journey of self-discovery, ironically loses out to The Expendables, which stars that Oscar winner's older brother Eric.

Last week's champion The Other Guys earned $17 million from 3,651 theatres, still a good showing.  In just two weeks, the Action-Comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, has pulled in $70 million.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which has been featured on Mr. Will-W.:Pop Maven much of late, debuted below expectations, pulling in $11.5 million from 2,818 theatres.  The adaptation of the Graphic Novel of the same title, is just one of numerous commercial disappointments starring Canadian Michael Cera, with his last couple efforts Paper Heart and Youth in Revolt also pulling in meagre numbers.  Critically though, Scott Pilgrim has fared much better, earning an 80% rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Inception in its fifth week, is still playing at 3,120 theatres and earned $11.5 million - enough to land it in fifth spot.  To date domestically, it has earned $248.6 million and it's almost expected now that it will be up for Best Picture at the Oscars next year.
