CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS AND STANLEY CUP CELEBRATE GAY PRIDE IN CHICAGO

Yay! I think I have a new favourite sport… which wouldn’t be saying much considering I don’t really have one. For the first time ever, the Stanley Cup, Hockey’s most coveted Icon, will be appearing at a Gay Pride event – Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade on Sunday June 27, 2010. The Chicago Blackhawks were invited by the Chicago Gay Hockey Association to feature the Trophy this year and surprisingly, they accepted the offer.

The idea to have Defenceman Brent Sopel accompany the Trophy will also serve as a fitting tribute from him to his good friend and ex-boss Brian Burke who manages the Toronto Maple Leafs. Burke’s son Brendan died tragically in a car accident this past February, only three months after he announced publicly that he was Gay. Touching.

The Chicago Cubs, a Baseball Team (I think!), will also have their own Float at the Parade. Okay, so now I have two favourite new sports! Last year in Toronto, the Conn Smythe Trophy (awarded to MVPs) made an appearance in our annual Parade, but this is much grander and v. progressive for the traditionally macho sport.
