AN EARLY LOOK: THE SMURFS MOVIE

More details have been leaked about The Smurfs movie and the cast is looking spectacular.  Confirmed so far are Katy Perry (Smurfette), Fred Armisen (Brainy Smurf), Neil Patrick Harris (Johan), Hank Azaria (Gargamel), Kevin James (Hefty Smurf), Alan Cumming (Gutsy Smurf), George Lopez (Grouchy Smurf), Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf) and many more notable, although primarily television actors.

Although it was originally slated for a Holiday 2010 release, a new tentative release date of July 2011 has been announced for the Sony/Columbia Pictures film directed by Raja Gosnell (Big Momma's House, Beverly Hills Chihuahua).  Director Quentin Tarantino and Glee's Jayma Mays are also rumoured to be attached to the project.

The story will revolve around evil Gargamel casting a spell on The Smurfs leading them to be transported from their village right into the heart of New York City, thus the film will be a combination of Live Action and CGI animation.
If you grew up in the '90s you might not have had an opportunity to acquaint yourself with the original Hanna-Barbera Productions series, which was a Saturday morning essential for kids.  I don't know about Saturday mornings nowadays, but it seems that quality cartoons are a dying breed and it's a shame because eating cereal in front of the television was an exciting weekly ritual for me growing up.

My favourite Smurf was definitely Smurfette, so Perry better not mess-up her big acting debut. Although I'm sure her actor/comedian fiancé Russell Brand will be there to give her many pointers. And hopefully they've evolved the storyline a bit since then as times have changed.  Perhaps we'll see Smurfs of a different colour, sexual orientations and religious groups?  :')
