MOVIE-GOERS PREFER TESTOSTERONE OVER ESTROGEN: THE EXPENDABLES LANDS ON TOP

Although it was never really much of a contest, Lionsgate/Maple Pictures' Festival of Testicles known as The Expendables, landed on top this weekend's Box Office tally with an estimated $35 million from 3,270 theatres. Although critically a failure (43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film appears to be a hit among fans of the action genre. Perusing through Twitter, praise is coming from allover.   Fans like @xsavagistx claim, "The Expendables=Violent Perfection. Simply amazing. Loved it." @yerkarmeldream admits, "As much as I HATE action movies, The Expendables was A GOOOOD movie!!!".  So there you have it.

Sony Pictures' Eat Pray Love pulled in $24 million this weekend, which is a very strong showing, even though Critics ripped it to shreds. The Julia Roberts film about a tri-continental journey of self-discovery, ironically loses out to The Expendables, which stars that Oscar winner's older brother Eric.

THE OTHER GUYS DEBUTS BIG

Hallelujah! Will Ferrell finally gets a hit, critically and commercially! The brilliant comedic actor who has gone through a bit of a slump with his last few films, struck Box Office gold this weekend with Sony Pictures' The Other Guys on-top with $35.7 million.  The film of course also stars likable Mark Wahlberg  and Samuel L. Jackson who might have had a hand in drawing movie-goers to the cinema.  Expect equally big numbers from the studio again next weekend with Julia Roberts' Eat Pray Love.

The Other Guys handed Inception its first defeat after landing on-top for three consecutive weeks, with $18.2 million this week. To date it has made $228 million domestically.

Step Up 3-D debuts coincidentally in third spot, the third installment in its franchise with $15.3 million. Meanwhile Sony Pictures' Salt, which took in $11 million in its third week of release, just beating out the hot mess of a comedy Dinner for Schmucks, in fifth with $10.5 million.

GIVEAWAY: SAMUEL L. JACKSON AUTOGRAPH

Now, who ever said Samuel L. Jackson wasn't a nice guy?  I received these in the mail today directly from him and just thought maybe one lucky Mr. Will-W:Pop Maven reader would want to have one of these 5x7s.  Yes??!

The Oscar-nominated actor as reported earlier this week, was just in town for the RBC Canadian Open's Mike Weir Charity Classic.  Jackson also appears in the upcoming Cop Comedy The Other Guys alongside Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson.  The Sony Pictures film opens August 6, 2010.  Click here for the film's official website.
