"LOLA VERSUS": MOVIE REVIEW

Still from Lola Versus
Out-of-nowhere comes a Comedy with no shortage of short of charm and wit in Daryl Wein's Lola Versus. Centering around 29-year-old Lola (Greta Gerwig) who gets dumped by her Fiance Luke (Joel Kinnaman), we join her in the coping process with the help of her Friends in this her Saturn Rising.  As we see Lola take liberties with her life never known before to her, we too become a part of her road to Self-Discovery and nobody makes blunders look as reasonable as she.

Gerwig is an exciting new Talent and although she has been selective with her choices thus far opting for complex and quirky roles, Lola Versus raises her profile, stamping her as one of the more likable and relatable Actresses of her Generation, carrying much of the weight here on her own.

A soon-to-be-RoboCop Star Kinnaman shows us a softer side here, never falling into the all-too-common trap of being that villainous Ex-Boyfriend. Instead he brings a Human aspect to his Role and an authentic sincerity which embodies many of the gray areas of Love in reality.  Whitney Star Zoe Lister Jones as always is fun and quick with the laughs as Lola's Best Friend Alice, serving triple duty as Executive Producer and Writer too.

Fox Searchlight releases Lola Versus on Friday, June 15, 2012.  A Chick Flick for the higher-minded.

ANALEIGH TIPTON, GRETA GERWIG & ADAM BRODY AT TIFF 2011 FOR "DAMSELS IN DISTRESS"

Analeigh Tipton at TIFF 2011 with Damsels in Distress
Sony Pictures Classics' Damsels in Distress after having closed the Venice Film Festival, is getting lots of positive buzz here in Toronto and its stars graced the Red Carpets of VISA Screening Room tonight for the latest effort by Director Whit Stillman.

Stars Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton and Adam Brody spent time post-Premiere interacting with Fans and I got to give the beautiful and talented Tipton a big hug in-person!  Unfortunately I didn't get a Photo in time as her Handler rushed her off while we were talking, but hoping to see her tomorrow morning at my Screening. Love her!  Even Film Critic Extraordinare Roger Ebert attended the Premiere this evening, appearing satisfied.  Can't wait to see this one!

See more Photos below (sorry for the blurriness):

ARTHUR (2011) - MOVIE REVIEW

Still from Arthur (2011)
What it lacks in substance, it certainly makes up for in charm. Although I'll admit I have never seen its 1982 predecessor, Jason Winer’s Arthur Remake starring quirky Brit Russell Brand, stands on its own as a modern day Fairy Tale for Big People.

Arthur (Brand) is a spoiled New York City Playboy with unlimited abundances. He has few ambitions in life other than to drink and have fun, with Nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren) acting as a Mother-like voice of reason in his life. His distant Mother Vivienne (Geraldine James) for financial reasons, wants him to wed the bossy Susan (Jennifer Garner), Daughter of Construction Tycoon Burt (Nick Nolte). Arthur of course has no affections for Susan and winds up meeting whimsical Storybook Writer Naomi (Greta Gerwig) by chance one day. Already engaged to Susan, Arthur is torn between finally having to grow-up into a Man and also choosing his Woman he will be with forever. Will he follow his heart?

The biggest problem with Arthur’s script is that presumably its most central theme is that of Love, but this however is outshined by the fact Arthur equally is a Late Bloomer’s coming-of-age Tale. Our attentions are divided between Arthur and his dilemma of having two Lovers and also his relationship with his level-headed Hobson. And because the latter relationship is punctuated by the strength of chemistry between Brand and Mirren, the actual Love Story here is insufficiently tended-to.
