"DRAGON" RESURGES TO THE TOP

Paramount/Disney's How to Train Your Dragon climbs back up to the top after after debuting there five weeks ago - by all means a rare feat. The brilliant animated feature brought in $15 million from 3,600 screens, defeating other some new challengers which had weak openings.

CBS Films' The Back-Up Plan starring Jennifer Lopez debuted in second spot with $12.3 million. The enjoyable romantic-comedy opened on-top preliminarily based on Friday's numbers, but alas got ousted with the onslaught on families venturing out to see How to Train Your Dragon over the weekend. Date Night continues to perform very consistently, slipping only to third spot after hovering near the top for the past three weeks. It earned $10.6 million this weekend.

Warner Bros.' graphic novel adaptation The Losers opened in fourth spot with $9.6 million, and is well on its way to making back its $25 million production budget. Check out my review of it here.

After debuting in number one last weekend, Lionsgate's Kick-Ass slips to fifth spot this weekend with $9.5 million, just surpassing the $35 million mark in earnings. There is lots of positive buzz for the action-hero comedy.

The only other debut in this weekend's Top Ten was Buena Vista's Oceans, which opened in eight spot with $6 million, marking a severe loss for its studio. Disney spent $80 million on its production.

KICK-ASS LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

Action-hero comedy, Kick-Ass lived up to its name in winning top spot at the Box Office this weekend taking in $19.8 million.  Disney's How to Train Your Dragon however, made it a tight match in second spot with $19.6 million.

Date Night despite slipping slightly to third spot, still garnered a healthy $17.3 million bringing its two week tally to $49.2 million.  Its cause was undoubtedly helped by a press blitz, including Tina Fey's return hosting gig on Saturday Night Live last weekend.  The romantic comedy overall continues to garner positive reviews.

Sony Screen Gems' comedy remake Death at a Funeral debuted in fourth spot this weekend with $17 million from 2,500 screens.  I will definitely be catching it in the near future despite its negative reviews.

DATE NIGHT IS STILL NO TITAN

Date Night fought hard but just fell short of toppling now two-week champ Clash of The Titans (3-D... but not really!) on this weekend's Box Office tally.  The Fox film earned $25.2 million,  being edged out by Titans, which brought in $26.3 million.  Date Night was produced for a $50 million budget and should have no difficulty recouping that amount in a week or two.  Read my review of the hilarious comedy here.

The feverish buzz for Disney's How to Train Your Dragon continues to trickle its way into homes across North America and it came a resilient third with $24.8 million it its third week of release.  If you haven't had a chance to see this classic, please hurry and do yourself a favour.  It's honestly not just for kids.

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too starring pop star Janet Jackson placed a distant fourth compared to the top three films, with $11 million in its second week, followed closely by another pop star headlined drama film, The Last Song starring Miley Cyrus.  To date, the film has banked $40 million, quadrupling what it cost to make.

The only other debut this week was Christian-themed Letters to God which brought in $1.3 million this weekend in tenth spot.

Expect comedy Sony Screen Gems' Death at a Funeral starring Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, James Marsden and Luke Wilson to debut big next weekend.

REVIEW: DATE NIGHT

Canadian director Shawn Levy's Date Night pulls out all the stops in bringing out the laughs. The romantic comedy starring television stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey, knows just  how ridiculous  it really is and succeeds with a big knowing wink.

Date Night revolves around a suburban couple, Phil (Carell) & Claire Foster (Fey) who are so caught up in mundane married life that they decide to spice up their ritual weekly night out. They decide on a whim to visit the hottest restaurant in town without a reservation and of course, they fail at getting a table. Phil however, notices that a particular table for two under the name "The Tripplehorns" is unclaimed and he ceases the moment. This is where disaster ensues.

In a case of mistaken identity, The Fosters are confused for The Tripplehorns by corrupt police officers Armstrong (Jimmi Simpson) and Collins (rapper Common) who have ties to a Mafia Head (Ray Liotta). They believe that The Tripplehorns are in possession of a stolen Flash Drive with incriminating evidence against the District Attorney Frank Crenshaw (William Fichtner) and have the intention of blackmailing Crenshaw with it. Armstrong and Collins are then led on a cat and mouse chase throughout New York City to find who they believe are The Tripplehorns. And even though The Fosters know they are innocent, they somehow find themselves getting caught in the thick of it all, falling deeper into trouble as they aren't able to convince their pursuers that they really are not The Tripplehorns.

Phil and Claire get into all sorts of hilarious antics and enlist the help of always shirtless Holbrooke (Mark Wahlberg), a top security expert and former real estate client of Claire's. The audience manages to get a few good laughs at the sexual tension between her and sexy Holbrooke at the expense of a jealous Phil who takes it like a man. 

"CLASH" IS A TITAN

Director Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans (3-D) remake was Box Office gold this Easter weekend, pulling in a stunning $64.1 million dollars from 3,777 screens. The Warner Bros. film stars Hollywood's most bankable new actor Sam Worthington (Avatar), Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson. A strong cast wasn't enough to save it from being ripped to shreds by critics. Also, foreign totals have yet to come in, but it won't be long before this one recoups its $125 million budget. Well done, indeed.  Did any of you see it?  I'm still on the fence about it.

Director/actor Tyler Perry has his market cornered and they turned out again this weekend to show their ardent support for his latest effort Why Did I Get Married Too?, which came in second with $30.1 million from 2,700 theatres. The Lionsgate film stars Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Louis Gossett Jr.,  Michael Jai White and Perry himself.

The year's best-reviewed film How to Train Your Dragon from Disney earned $29.2 million in its second week bringing its total to $92.3 million in earnings. Worldwide, the film has made $134.6 million and should be sticking around the Top Ten for a while as the positive word-of-mouth continues to spread.

Alice in Wonderland (3-D) hangs on in fifth with $8.2 million this weekend, just surpassing the $300 million in earnings mark domestically.

Comedies Hot Tub Time Machine ($8 million), The Bounty Hunter ($6.2 million), She's Out of My League ($1.4 million) and the incredibly resilient Shutter Island just hangs on to a spot in the Top Ten with $1.4 million. Click on the links to read reviews for each of these.

Fox's Date Night opens in 3,300 screens next Friday. Expect a massive debut for the comedy starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell.

TINA FEY ON ESQUIRE

Funnywoman Tina Fey (above) looking absolutely sexy on the April 2010 issue of Esquire Magazine.  In the interview, Fey shocks readers with a whole lotta expletives and on her few and far between Twitter updates, she says that "Twitter seems like a busman's holiday: just more writing. I have no plans to do it. I'll just stick with my 24/7 webcam. I'm old-fashioned that way."
