PRODUCTION UPDATES TORONTO: "CARRIE", "THE F-WORD", "REMEMORY", "ROBOCOP", "LIZ & DICK" & "CYBERGEDDON"

Julianne Moore at TIFF 2009
Just a few updates on Production Timelines for some notable Projects set to film in Toronto this Summer to share as per the Ontario Media Development Corporation:

RoboCop from Director Jose Padilha is penciled-in to film between August 7-December 14, 2012. In addition to Joel Kinnaman being cast for the Remake, Gael García Bernal also has been added to the Film from Sony Pictures. Some rumours are circulating that Sean Penn and Edward Norton also are being eyed for the Project.

Director Michael Dowse (whom we chatted with back in February) recently achieved great success domestically with his Goon being the number one Film in its debut at the Canadian Box Office.  He  now has his sights set on a Rom-Com which he says will be completely different from anything he's done. The F-Word is set to film in Toronto between May 28-July 16, 2012.

Director Mark Palansky who brought Penelope starring Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci to TIFF 2006 will be filming Rememory in Toronto for a quick Shoot between May 10-June 8, 2012 and attached so far are Emmy and Golden Globe Winner Peter Dinklage and also our own Catherine O'Hara, who like him also is a fellow Emmy Winner.

Mad Men Producer Matthew Weiner is lending his name to Cybergeddon, which although is listed as a TV Movie, is set to premiere on Yahoo this Fall.  CSI:Crime Scene Investigation Creator Anthony Zuiker will be helming the Project, which will be formatted for to be viewed on Mobile Devices and Computer Screens. Cybergeddon films between May 7-31, 2012, also a quick Shoot.

The much-awaited Carrie Remake from Sony Screen Gems starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Jamie King is  closer to having Oscar-nominated Actress Julianne Moore sign-on, and also now is listed officially as a Toronto Production.  It would appear dates are still being finalized for the Kimberly Peirce Horror Film.

And lastly, for those of us excited to see Lindsay Lohan in Toronto filming Lifetime Television Movie Liz and Dick this Summer, The Wrap has just announced that filming will begin in June with Los Angeles mentioned as the locale for the Shoot.  Not sure what this means for Toronto which originally was eyed for Production, but this isn't boding well for Fans and Paparazzi hoping to get a glimpse of Lohan...

TORONTO WELCOMES 4 "QUEENS" & A KING THIS SPRING/SUMMER

L to R: Lindsay Lohan, Abigail Breslin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins & Chloë Grace Moretz
Four "Teen Queens" and a King of Cinema will be in Toronto this Spring/Summer as we play host to several major Stars confirmed to film in our City! Which are you most excited about?

Lily Collins as confirmed by Deadline in March, will be taking on the Lead Role of Clary Fray in The Mortal Instruments.  The Film centers on her mission to find her kidnapped Mother, while discovering she is from a long line of Shadowhunters who protect the World from Demons. Harold Zwart, Helmer of Box Office hit The Karate Kid (2010) has taken over from Scott Stewart who right now is busy in the City prepping the SyFy Network's Defiance.  This is the first Adaptation in Series of six Novels by Cassandra Clare and is set to begin production this August.

The brilliant Abigail Breslin (whom we interviewed back in December) will be teaming-up with Splice Director Vincenzo Natali playing a Girl who along with her Family was murdered in their home in 1986, surfacing to warn her modern day counterpart.  She took to Twitter first expressing her excitement about the Venture, Tweeting on April 3, 2012: "SOO excited to start filming #Haunter and work with the director Vincenzo Natali!". Haunter begins filming mid-April.

As announced previously also Chloë Grace Moretz and former Teen Queen Lindsay Lohan are Toronto-bound too, with the former beginning work on a Carrie Remake and the latter beginning work on a Lifetime Television Movie about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, known tentatively as Liz & Dick.  As a bit of Trivia, Mirvish Productions presented Private Lives last Fall starring Kim Cattrall in role once played famously by Taylor and Paul Gross also in a role filled prior by BurtonBurton also proposed to Taylor at the King Edward Hotel in the City back in January 1964 - wonder if they will be authentic and film that scene at the same Venue?

And as if that weren't exciting enough, the Ontario Media Development Corporation confirmed Friday that Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) will be filming An Enemy here in Toronto late May. Heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal whom we met back in May 2010, will be playing a Dual Role in the Thriller based on the Novel, The Double by José Saramago.  Gyllenhaal's Character rents a DVD to find his exact Double in the Film, going out on a search to find him which turns both of their lives upside-down.  IndieWire was among the first broke the Story back in March that Gyllenhaal was being considered for the Lead Role.

LINDSAY LOHAN TORONTO-BOUND FOR ELIZABETH TAYLOR TV MOVIE

Still from Mean Girls
Although I'm not quite sure what Elizabeth Taylor would think of it, Executive Producer Larry Thompson confirmed  first in January via E! News that Lindsay Lohan is set to star as that Film Icon in an upcoming Lifetime TV Movie titled tentatively, Elizabeth & Richard: A Love StoryMegan Fox also was in- the-running but it is said that she is focusing now on starting a Family with Brian Austin Green.

The Film centers around the tumultuous relationship of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, as they met while filming Cleopatra and subsequently wound-up marrying and divorcing twice. What better Actress to take us through the Drama than someone who knows it well herself?  Production is set to take place in-and-around Toronto.

TMZ confirmed today that Lohan has been given the green light to work here in Canada after they had received confirmation from her Probation Officer and the Court that she completed her Community Work requirements.  We couldn't be happier for Lohan who is making a genuine effort to sort herself out, as she is set to return to the same City where she made 2004's legendary Mean Girls

LINDSAY LOHAN ON "SNL"

Lindsay Lohan on SNL
Drawing some mixed reviews from her big return to NBC's Saturday Night Live, one cannot help but feel a bit underwhelmed especially after all the build-up leading to tonight's Episode hosted by Lindsay Lohan. Now the problems weren't all entirely all her from a performance standpoint, but more the lack of wit in some of the material she was relegated to.

Starting off with some big laughs, a blonde and almost unrecognizable Lohan put her pride aside and poked fun at her own personal problems during the Show's introduction with her Ankle Monitor going off jokingly as she stepped too far center stage. Kenan Thompson then came on-stage, checking her pupils and then getting a pat-down from Kristen Wiig, before we were re-assured that Lohan's certified and ready-to-go.  Jon Hamm even was on-standby in the event they needed a Back-up.  They kid.  Or were they?

LINDSAY LOHAN "PLAYBOY" ISSUE TO ARRIVE EARLY

Lindsay Lohan on January-February 2012 Issue of Playboy
Just a couple days after Lindsay Lohan's January-February 2012 Playboy Cover hit the Internet, Hugh Hefner confirmed today that the Issue will be released early.  Photos from the Spread by Yu Tsai surfaced earlier today and as per Hefner on Twitter, "Because of the interest & the Internet leak, we're releasing the Lindsay Lohan Issue early.".  There still is no exact confirmed date though for release.

The Photos once again have Lohan channeling Marilyn Monroe once again as she had in her 2008 New York Magazine Spread

If I were to weigh-in, I'd say Tsai's Photos are done as tastefully as the term can be applied and Lohan is flattered by the Art Direction and Styling.  Curious to see if this will spike sales for the suffering Magazine and Covergirl....

LINDA LOVELACE BIOPIC "INFERNO" TO BEGIN PRODUCTION NEXT WEEK

Malin Åkerman at TIFF 2010
Even with Lindsay Lohan no longer tied to the project, Inferno still looks intriguing enough, having been on my radar for the past year. Screen Daily reports that the Biopic based upon now-deceased Adult Film Star Linda Lovelace's Autobiography Ordeal, will begin production on Monday.  The Book recounts Lovelace's years of abuse and coercion into Prostitution at the hands of her then-Husband Chuck Traynor.

There's a possibility that this one will be completed in time for the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012 and maybe even be considered for TIFF 2012 - although hopefully sooner than later we will see its release.

Toronto's v. own Malin Åkerman stars as Lovelace alongside Matt Dillon who will play Traynor, her sadistic then-Husband.  Sasha Grey, also a former Adult Film Star, will be appearing in Inferno, produced by Muse Productions.  Cannot wait!

MALIN AKERMAN REPLACES LINDSAY LOHAN IN LINDA LOVELACE BIOPIC "INFERNO"

Malin Akerman at TIFF 2010
Poor Lindsay.... lucky Malin!  Director/Screenwriter Matthew Wilder had originally cast Lindsay Lohan in the controversial role of iconic '70s Porn Star Linda Lovelace in his upcoming Feature, Inferno.  That honour now has been bestowed upon Canada's v. own Malin Akerman.  Based upon Lovelace's Autobiography Ordeal, the Film is set to begin production shortly and it will be exciting to see Akerman branch out here in her darkest role to date.  Go Malin!

Understandably, Lohan has her own issues to sort through right now and we all wish her the best as she gets back in fighting form once again.  Lindsay Lohan, the original Emma Stone.

JUDD APATOW'S ALL-STAR MOCK PSA FOR THE AMERICAN JEWISH WORLD SERVICE

Director/Screenwriter Judd Apatow's been everywhere this past week promoting his new book I Found This Funny: My Favourite Pieces of Humor and Some That May Not Be That Funny At Allincluding an appearance alongside Robin Williams and Kylie Minogue on Jay Leno last week.

The Director of The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up recently brought together a slew of stars for this mock Public Service Announcement for the American Jewish World Service, a non-profit organization which educates the American-Jewish community on Global Justice.  This Clip, produced for website Funny or Die is absolutely hilarious and here we see Jewish stars like Sarah Silverman and Jerry Seinfeld, to clearly non-Jewish celebrities like Don Johnson to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to Lindsay Lohan, voicing their thoughts on AJWS.  Lohan even pokes fun at her own financial debt.

*sigh* Once upon a time when times were better, before Emma Stone came along....

LINDSAY LOHAN IN SEPTEMBER ISSUE OF VANITY FAIR

“I don’t care what anyone says. I know that I’m a damn good actress. … And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible—but that’s what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes.” - Lindsay Lohan

Prior to her incarceration recently, Lindsay Lohan had time to sit down with Vanity Fair's Nancy Jo Sales for an interview and do a photo shoot with Norman Jean Roy.  Read Lohan try to make sense of her series of unfortunate events, transferring the blame to just about everyone but herself  here.  The interview will be in the upcoming September issue of the magazine.  Are Casting Directors and the Public ready to forgive?  Likely not.

Robert Rodriguez's Machete, in which Lohan appears, opens this Friday, September 3, 2010.

NO BUSINESS IN CANNES

I’m sorry ladies, but you have no business being in Cannes. I’ve checked your IMDB pages and there is nothing remotely-related to the Cannes Film Festival on the Docket for any of you. It seems that every time I click on some photos from the festivities in the French Riviera, I keep seeing Eva Longoria-Parker, Lindsay Lohan and Aishwaraya Rai pop up. And honestly, you know it’s a bad sign when I ask my Indian friend Tym about Rai and she asked, “Wasn’t she last in that movie ‘Indian Spice Girls’?”. I think she meant Rai’s 2005 film Mistress of Spices. Yes, even the people of India aren’t watching her movies, so what gives?

Please tell me this isn’t the most star power the festival could muster. Another reason why the Toronto International Film Festival reigns supreme. We get the titles that sway Academy voters and we get the real stars. Cannes 0, Toronto 1. (Photo credit: Rex/Getty Images)

AN OPEN LETTER TO LINDSAY LOHAN (RE: PURPLE MAGAZINE)

MR.WILL-W.: POP MAVEN launched in September 2009 and going through some of my archives, I'm surprised that I have yet to devote any attention to Lindsay Lohan.  Perhaps this is a pat-on-the-back in that I try my best to steer focus away from gossip on this blog, which seems to be all Lohan is known for of late.  We are all aware of her partying, relationship drama, rehab stints and trouble with the law even if we choose not to know.

Lohan can be seen currently gracing Issue #13 of French fashion/art magazine Purple.  To be honest, prior to hearing about her being on it, I've never heard of the publication.  So after skimming through some of the fruits of her shoot with photographer Terry Richardson, I must say that the haute couture styling meets raw/edgy photography is fantastic.  The model, not so much.

The cover, which is meant to push some buttons with its Crucifixion theme has been done many a time before.  I'm not shocked.  Bored?  Maybe.  And Lohan gets drowned completely underneath all the Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood like a lost child at Walmart.
