As if there were ever any doubt, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse found itself on top this July 4th weekend where it made $69 million this weekend. Oh, did I mention that since its opening Wednesday, it's already pulled in $161 million (aka more money than I will ever see in this lifetime)?
M. Night Shymalan's The Last Airbender from Paramount debuted in second this weekend with $40.7 million, which is not bad, but not anywhere near the $150 million which its studio invested in it. This is enough to keep Toy Story 3 in third after its two week reign, but still managing to pull in a staggering $30.2 million. Amazing.
Despite horrific reviews, comedy Grown Ups lands in fourth spot with $18.5 million and right now is just under $3 million shy of earning back its $80 million production costs. A v. busy weekend indeed.
Also noteworthy is Fox Searchlight's Cyrus, which I loved, in tenth spot, climbing up ten spots from last weekend. Showing in only 77 theatres, this is might impressive and word-of-mouth continues to spread like wildfire for this Sundance Festival favourite.
