I'm in love. And I'm not even that big a fan of Burgers. The Gourmet Burger Co. was founded by John Ward who grew up in Australia. Because Australians focus on "fast and fresh", Ward wanted to instill that mentality into Take Out Food here locally and he is doing just that with his Canadian-raised Beef Burgers, aged a minimum of 30 days. In addition to this, he uses locally grown toppings also when possible.
The Gourmet Burger Co. still is relatively new to Toronto with three locations only: Yonge x Charles, Parliament x Carlton and the latest addition to the franchise at Yonge x Eglinton. The Aussie Burger, although nothing new to Australians, is exotic for Torontonians. It contains a unique combination of tangy toppings like thin slices of Beet, Fresh Pineapple and Tomato. These unique items are balanced by the savoury flavour of Cheddar Cheese, Bacon and a Fried Egg over the thick, yet still not disgustingly large Beef Patty, sandwiched into a a soft Bakery-style Bun. Remarkable.
Priced at $8.50 CAN, The Aussie Burger is in the upper pricing echelon of Fast Food Burgers (but still cheaper than many pubs and restaurants in this city), but if you're going all out you might as well make it a Combo. For an additional $3.95, you get your choice of Soft Drink and choice of Side Salad, Beer-Battered Onion Rings, Sweet Potato Fries or Regular Fries to go with your Burger. I'd advise against the Regular Fries as it looks as though they're still perfecting the recipe and were over-fried. The Sweet Potato Fries are great and the Onion Rings are outstanding.
