For those friends in the Toronto area, the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival launches officially this weekend and its promoters kindly have invited me to contribute a few pieces to their website to help spread the word about this wonderful event. What an honour! As an avid photo taker/pop culture lover myself, this year’s festival promises lots of star power in addition to featuring the work of some of our best local photographers. Music video director/photographer David LaChapelle who has brought us some memorable work with icons like Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Amanda Lepore, will be doing a public installation called The Rape of Africa (photo seen above with supermodel Naomi Campbell) for the next month at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in the city’s trendy Queen West area. Great Canadian author Douglas Coupland’s known best for his worldwide sensation novel jPod, will have his work featured in The Brothel Without Walls exhibit at the University of Toronto Art Centre. Controversial photographer Hank Willis Thomas’ who often explores issues of race and culture, will also have his work featured on billboards in a public installation at Spadina Ave. and Front St. W. Pretty cool stuff.
