agree, when the artist authorizes it (not when someone downloads illegal material, i mean). the whole model of a $12 album pressed on plastic or vinyl is long, long gone.
i read that garth brooks doesn't distribute his stuff via itunes, because they allow cosumers to buy individual tracks. he's really out of touch, isn't he?
indeed, he would be. my motto is that if the material is of quality and the fans are loyal, they will support it at the end of the day whether or not it be album sales or concert/merchandise sales.
very true. thus other mediums like concerts, spokesmodel gigs and fan merchandise must be relied on. if it's not the "illegal downloaders", it's the record labels aren't gouging the artist's share of the purse.
you may have noticed how dreadfully obsessed i am with blondie and debbie harry. anyway, they / she have been on tour almost constantly since 1998, just before "maria" and no exit came out. i guess they realize that sales won't bring in the money they could retire on.

ReplyDeleteon the other hand, million-unit selling artists are no longer seeing those stellar numbers, anymore.

ReplyDeleteDowloads are good for artists who are still trying to build a rep. Streaming is probably enough of a freebie for the established acts.
ReplyDeleteRyan, you make an excellent point about differentiating between newer and more established artists.
